The GIIS KL Auditorium transformed into a lush, green showcase as secondary students from Year 7 to Year 10 celebrated World Tourism Day with a hands-on sustainability initiative titled "Ecotourism: Plant Your Destination." Organized by the Humanities Department on September 29, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, the event challenged students to combine environmental conservation with global geography.
Guided by Humanities teacher Ms. Kay Raj, each year group was assigned a distinct region: Year 7 explored Africa, Year 8 investigated Asia, Year 9 researched the Middle East, and Year 10 studied Oceania. Every student took responsibility for an individual country within their assigned region, examining its natural environment, native vegetation, green spaces, and ecotourism potential.
To bridge theoretical learning with practical environmental stewardship, each student received a pot, packed soil, and presentation chart paper. Students then selected and brought in a living plant that meaningfully represented the natural landscape, vegetation, or eco-travel concept of their assigned country. Each potted plant was carefully labeled with the student’s name, destination, plant species, and its specific ecotourism connection.
Alongside their potted plants, students created detailed country charts displaying flags, geographical facts, eco-friendly travel tips, famous green spaces, and key ways tourists can minimize their environmental footprint. During the exhibition, students presented both their plants and charts to teachers and judges, articulating how responsible tourism can preserve biodiversity while supporting local communities.
The initiative integrated multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
Furthermore, the project embodied several core GIIS 9 Gems values such as Academic Excellence and Skill Development, Innovation and Creativity, Personality Development and Leadership, Universal Values, Ethics and Community Care.
To ensure the impact extended beyond World Tourism Day, all plants were transitioned into permanent Classroom Green Corners. Appointed Green Monitors now oversee the daily watering, sunlight exposure, and upkeep of these plants, reinforcing the event's central ethos: "Take Memories, Leave Footprints of Green."
